paperchime.

Free for parents of Class 1 and 2 children

Your first five days.

Fifteen minutes a day for five days. Each day has one thing to do with your child, using a pencil, paper and things from around the home. At the end you will know which area to practise next. This is practice for an adult to do with a child. It is not a test and it does not diagnose anything.

This plan is for Classes 1 and 2. Another class: Class 3 · Class 4 · Class 5 · Class 6 · Class 7 · Class 8 · Class 9

Day 1

English: six sounds, then short words

Say the sounds s, a, t, p, i and n. Say the sound, not the letter name: s says /sss/, not "ess". Write each letter in the air, then on paper. Then put the sounds together to make sat, sit, sip, tip, tap, pin and nap. Say each sound, slide them together, then say the word.

Day 2

Maths: count and write 1 to 10

Count spoons, beans or buttons into a row. Touch each one once as you say the number. Write the numbers 1 to 5 with your finger, then on paper. Play "one more": show 3 beans and ask how many there are with one more. Use a number line from 0 to 10 and hop one step to the right.

Day 3

Hindi: अ, आ and a few words

Say the sounds अ and आ. अ is the short a inside कल, कम and नल. आ is the long aa in आम. Read the words कल, नल, मन, तन, कम, आम, कमल and नाम one letter at a time, then the whole word. Words that end in a consonant letter are said without the final अ, so कमल is read kamal.

Day 4

Shapes: a hunt around the home

Draw a circle, a square, a triangle and a rectangle. Count the sides and the corners of each. Then walk around the home and find one of each: a plate, a tile, a corner of a cloth, a door. Draw or write what you find.

Day 5

Review: repeat the hardest day

Look back over the week. Which day was easiest, and which needed more help? Do the hardest day again with fewer prompts. Cut out some paper shapes and sort them into piles. Finish with a short celebration: a sticker, a clap or a story together.
